UNSEEN QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND ON THE HERITAGE EXPLORER
If you’re looking for a fabulous active escape in our beautiful country, let me inspire you with an unforgettable five-night cruise around the Marlborough Sounds. It’s a chance to discover New Zealand in its raw, breathtaking beauty.
Flying into Blenheim, we were treated to stunning aerial views before boarding our delightful 18-berth vessel. From the moment we stepped aboard, our fabulous crew welcomed us with genuine Kiwi hospitality that set the tone for the journey ahead.
As we departed Picton Harbour on the Heritage Explorer, it became clear we were in for a truly special few days—Michelin-star cuisine, exceptional local wines, awe-inspiring scenery, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Each day began with an optional 6:30am dip in the Sounds from the aft of the ship—and the crew were just as keen as the guests. This was closely followed by breakfast, all prepared onboard. Choices ranged from Danish pastries and flaky croissants to homemade muesli, or you could opt for the full monty: a cooked breakfast made to order.
Our first land-based adventure in the Sounds was Ship Cove, famously known as the place where Captain James Cook first set foot after arriving aboard the Endeavour. The tracks were well maintained, winding through stunning canopies of native New Zealand bush, with endless ridge-line views overlooking the magnificent Sounds.
The walking fitness required was very manageable. Most walks ranged from a gentle 20 minutes to around two to three hours, with plenty of viewing platforms and seating along the way—perfect for resting or sneaking a snack, if breakfast hadn’t quite been enough. That said, with two-course lunches and three-course dinners served daily, there was certainly no need for frequent scroggin stops.
Two other special visits were to the rarely accessed Motuara and Blumine Island sanctuaries, both now predator-free thanks to the incredible work of the Department of Conservation. While some of the walks here were not long, it was essential to stroll slowly along the beautiful native tracks, taking the time to fully absorb the natural surroundings and the rich orchestra of birdsong.
Rare species spotted included the orange-crowned Kākāriki and the Saddleback, and we were also fortunate to see Weka, Kererū, Tūī, Fantails, and Robins, to name just a few.
While the stunning destination is undoubtedly a major highlight of this wonderful five-night expedition, for me it was the incredible crew who truly made the journey so special. We began as strangers and disembarked as friends.
The food was exceptional throughout, and the opportunity to experience such a beautiful part of New Zealand aboard the Heritage Explorer is one that will not disappoint in any way. I can’t recommend this piece of paradise highly enough to anyone seeking the finest hospitality and scenery that New Zealand is renowned for.
